My first sewing experience was with my grandmother as a toddler. She owned a treadle sewing machine and I would sit on the foot platform and go back and forth as if it were my own personal teeter totter. Grandma soon pulled me up on her lap and allowed me to put my hand on the fabric to guide it through the machine. Before long she had me making little elastic waist skirts which impressed everyone!
My next leap in sewing was when my mother told me I could either wear my sister’s hand-me-downs or she’d be happy to buy me a pattern and fabric. The decision was easy, and with her help I was off to the races. My mother purchased a Pfaff when I was in 4th grade, she and I took a sewing class, where I made a pink wool tailored lined suit for Easter with lapels and bound button holes. I loved to sew!
In junior high school Home Economics, I was ahead of the class and my teacher, Betty Smith, became my next mentor. I’d spend whatever time I could in her room to soak up more knowledge. In the eighth grade I made another Easter outfit, a linen shift dress and a linen lined coat. Mrs. Smith asked me to participate in an interview with a Cincinnati Enquirer reporter who was doing student accomplishment profiles to help the school bond levy pass. The notoriety pushed my love of sewing more once again.
As a young adult, I expanded my sewing to include home decorating; window treatments and upholstery to make my apartments look chic on a shoestring budget. Through the years I have continued to refine my self-taught home decorating sewing and have also helped many friends learn how easy and fun it can be to do it yourself.
Although my professional career was in Human Resources, I eventually was able to even blend in my sewing knowledge when I worked for a large private label men’s tailored clothing manufacturer, Palm Beach Company. As Vice President of Human Resources I had 3 sewing plants in Tennessee and Alabama with over 3,000 seamstresses. Here I was able to become familiar with the manufacturing process of garments going from cloth to store.
Currently, I enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow sewing hobbyists and I am anxious to pass along this tradition of fun to the next generation. My retail store, Sew Much Fun & More is a place to buy machines, fabric, notions and other fun paraphernalia as well as a source of classes and workshops that teach traditional and new techniques in sewing. – Lori Breiner-Wyllie, Owner of Sew Much Fun and More
